This coastal city has been twinned with Delta City of British Columbia Canada and have accepted each other as sister cities and they will be partners in socio-economic development empowerment of people and people to people diplomacy network.
This was solemnized in a unique partnership MoU signed today by the Mayors of Mangalore City Corporation and Delta City Corporation in a simple ceremony held in the City Corporation office.
According to the MoU document made available for Mangalorean.com the two cities will pursue economic development and urban development and empowerment of people together by sharing the experiences each of them have gathered. Environmental concerns were one of the issues.
Louise Jackson, the Mayor of Delta City and Rajani Dugganna, The Mayor of Mangalore signed a document that will enable and empower the people of both the cities to achieve common social and economic development by sharing views from time to time.
When questioned to Ms. Jackson about Why Mangalore?, she replied that Mangalore and Delta city has similar problems to tackle, goals to reach and similar interests. Environment conservation and preservation of culture are some of the important issues faced by both cities. She also added that Mangalore is very much like her own city, Hence they are also aim at having common trade and commerce through respective institution.
The tie of the sister city between these two cities started in 2009 when Mr. Shankar Bhat, The Former Mayor of Mangalore had interacted with his counterpart of Delta City in Bangkok during the Conference of World Mayors.
Ms. Dugganna said “Both the Mayors will consolidate on the ties between the two cities in various fields like culture, economics, business, trade, promotion of culture and build a bi-lateral relationship where best practices of both cities will be exchanged.”
The delegation included Louise Jackson and her team-mates chief administrative officer George Harvie and administrative manager Mangit Kiala.
The team will be in Mangalore for three days and will leave the city on 14 October. They will be visiting major happening places in and around Mangalore like NMPT, KCCI, Manipal University and Krishna Mutt and others. They are also keen on visiting Bangalore and speak to the members of the Federation Of Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industry as well as visit few IT companies.
Mangalore is the third city in Karnataka to get twinned with the sister city of their own. Other two are Bangalore with Cleveland Ohio, United States and Manipal with Loma Linda University California, United States.
The Sister Cities International has been the brain child of former president of the United State Dwight Eisenhower with an idea for bringing people of different cities without consideration of political borders basically to bring in People Diplomacy initiatives
